Eyelid surgery is a procedure performed at the Center for Plastic Surgery at Ridgewood Hill and at the Blue Ridge Surgery Center, on patients in the Roanoke Valley and surrounding areas including Salem, Blacksburg, Lynchburg and West Virginia, to correct heavy drooping eyelids and remove bags under the eyes revealing a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
What is Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?
Eyelid surgery, either upper or lower blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the upper or lower eyelids. It can change a tired or heavy lidded look into a fresher and brighter appearance.
Benefits of Eyelid Surgery
While many patients look to eyelid surgery to correct a tired look, there may be other benefits of eyelid surgery including:
- A lighter feeling around the eyes
- Better vision not impeded by drooping eyelids
- Diminished fine lines around the eyes
- A more visible upper eyelid.
How is Blepharoplasty Performed?
Two areas receive treatment from eyelid surgery – upper and lower lids – each having a slightly different procedure performed frequently under local anesthesia. During upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made extending in the crease of the upper eyelid to the side of the eye. This helps reduce excess skin and possibly remove a slight amount of fat that may be bulging under the lid. Lower eyelid surgery involves an incision just under the lower lashes to remove excess fat and/or skin. The incisions are closed with sutures and covered with tape for several days.
Preparing for Eyelid Surgery
To prepare for eyelid surgery, patients meet with Dr. Wray for a consultation to go over the procedure as well as their complete medical history. In addition, it may be necessary to do the following prior to the procedure:
- Be in good health or have medical clearance for your procedure.
- Stop smoking and the use of all nicotine products at least two weeks prior to surgery
- Discontinue vitamins, supplements and any over the counter medications at least two weeks prior to surgery
Eyelid Surgery Recovery
Following eyelid surgery, sutures are removed within four to five days. There will be some swelling and bruising around the eyes, which diminishes over a few weeks. Depending on the type of work, patients frequently can return to work within a week.
Eyelid Surgery Results
The results of eyelid surgery become very noticeable within a few weeks of the procedure as the swelling and bruising diminishes.
How much does Eyelid Surgery Cost?
The cost of eyelid surgery depends on the extent of the procedure. Dr. Wray will discuss the cost and financing options during the consultation. We require full payment prior to the procedure via cash, check, MasterCard®, VISA®, and Discover®. We also offer financing through CareCredit®.
